May 9, 2023, 7 to 9 PM

The Otter Valley Aquarium Society (OVAS) will present an illustrated talk on collecting South American catfish in the wild by Shane Linder on May 9th at 7:00 PM at the Maclure Library in Pittsford. The meeting will be in the lower level of the building, which is ADA accessible. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Shane Linder is the "Shane" behind Planetcatfish.com's Shane's World. Shane's World houses well over 150 articles by various catfish experts making it the largest such resource known to exist. Shane is also a frequent contributor to several US and international aquarium periodicals and has been a guest speaker at numerous tropical fish conventions in the US and Europe. He was a member of the National Science Foundation's All Catfish Species Inventory a global consortium of taxonomists & systematists, which from 2003 to 2009 attempted to facilitate the discovery, description & dissemination of knowledge of all catfish species (spoiler alert... there were too many to describe). From 2000-2020 Shane lived and collected fishes extensively in Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, South Africa, Uganda and Nigeria. He has made additional collecting expeditions into Ecuador, Peru and Brazil.

His featured talk at the OVAS meeting is titled "Collecting Venezuela and Colombia; from the high Andes, through the vast llanos to the Orinoco and Magdalena river systems, discover the massive diversity of catfishes found throughout Venezuela and Colombia.
