Announcement of Event and Call for Volunteers
The Vermont Sampler Initiative needs volunteers for its upcoming Sampler ID Day, to be held on Friday May 12th and Saturday May 13th at the Vermont History Center in Barre.
Are you a history enthusiast? And/or a needleworker? Your help would be greatly appreciated so that this event can take place.
Do you own an historic sampler? Make an appointment to bring in your sampler to be examined.
The Vermont Sampler Initiative aims to help find and document an underused Vermont history resource: 19th century schoolgirl samplers. The group is looking to inventory and enter into an online database samplers and other embroideries made by women and girls across America that now reside in public and private collections throughout Vermont. Needlework samplers are pieces of fabric that were used to practice various embroidery stitches and motifs and to showcase mastery of these skills. They were commonly made by girls in the 1800s. Samplers help us share our common history, teach us more about our communities, and give us an historical glimpse into the lives and education of girls in Vermont. They can also be a rich source of previously undiscovered genealogical information.
With a grant from the Vermont Humanities Council, the Vermont Sampler Initiative is filling the gap in our collective knowledge. The project has held identification days at various museum throughout Vermont, and will be at the Vermont History Center in Barre on May 12th and 13th to examine historic samplers.
Do you have a sampler that you would like to have examined? Are you interested in volunteering at the event, even for just part of a day? Volunteers of all kinds are needed -- no experience necessary! To volunteer or learn more, please email samplersvt@gmail.com.
