Hello Richmond,
Have you picked up your green Green Up Day trash bags found just inside the door of our Town Center?
With Green Up Day on Saturday, May 6th, I want to remind you to make your plans and let us know about them by going to the Town Center and using the marker on the laminated map there, alongside the green bags in the entryway, to identify where you will be working. There's also a sheet where you can list your name and the road you want to clean up so that other people can help you, or so they can work on other stretches of that road, or choose other roads to clean up. Please communicate your plans on that map. This would be most helpful!!
You can also report your Green Up plans on the Green Up Vermont app you can learn about on their website.
The Recreation Committee is hosting a clean up at Volunteers Green from 10am-12pm on Green Up Day, May 6th. This is a great opportunity, particularly, for families with young children to participate in Vermont's Green Up Day in a safe environment. All are welcome clean up Volunteers Green and learn more about what the Richmond Recreation Committee has been working on over the past year! If interested, please contact sheri@lynnmanagement.com so they have a head count for light snacks. Please bring gloves and a rake. They are hoping for a good, eager crew to:
● Clean up the playground area, rake the mulch and sandbox area.
● Clean up benches and tables.
● Pick up down branches and debris on the natural walking areas of the Volunteers Green.
● Pick up any trash and put in trash receptacles.
● Pull out the lawn games for the season.
● Clean up the band shell area
A fellow Richmond resident contacted me collecting returnable bottles and cans as you find them and bagging them separately to be returned for the money and to reduce the amount of trash sent to a landfill. Please consider bringing extra bags with you to collect returnables and recyclable trash. Be sure to WEAR GLOVES to better deal with dirty and unsafe trash.
Please be safe greening up!! Other safety reminders from the "Resources" page of Green Up Vermont's web site, https://greenupvermont.org --which has all kinds of great info:
• Wear long pants and boots and always check your body for ticks.
• If you see a needle or sharp material – find an adult and do not put it in your bag with the other trash. Put it in a thick plastic container, clearly mark "DO NOT RECYCLE," and duct tape the lid on, then put it into the regular trash. Visit http://www.healthvermont.gov for further information.
• Road Caution – Always work facing oncoming traffic.
And please tie your trash bag closed when full. Keep your good work in the bag!
Reminder: If at all possible please help Richmond's road crew by bringing your bags of trash to the Town Garage at the top end of Thompson Road. The road crew volunteers their time to collect the trash left on the roadsides. Let's make their job much easier this year!!
Please report your trash pick-up stats to your Green Up town coordinator--that's me, Elizabeth Wright (ecwright1414@gmail.com), or to our Town Clerk, Linda Parent. This is what we are hoping to learn after Green Up Day:
- How many bags did you collect?
- How many tires?
- How many volunteers in your group?
- What road(s) did you green up? Where exactly did you work? What length of road did you cover?
- Any large areas (special projects) that need additional attention?
- Strangest item(s) collected?
Much of this information is crucial in helping Vermont get grants and other funding to keep Green Up programs going.
Thank you so very much, in advance, for the good work you will be doing to help clean up the roadsides in Richmond--or elsewhere. On Green Up Day we can all recognize how lucky we are to live in a beautiful place that people love and care about. Let's all contribute if we can--even along the roadside right where we live.
Where are your favorite roads or places in Richmond to walk, or bike, or drive? Wouldn't it be nice if you didn't see any trash at all along the roadside there?!!
Thank you for reading this and doing what you can. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Happy spring! Happy Green Up!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth (Ibit) Wright
