Hello neighbors,
I wanted to invite everyone to a talk I am hosting as a part of Public Philosophy Week, sponsored by the Philosophy Department at the University of Vermont. Public Philosophy Week is an annual event (though paused during the pandemic), that seeks to promote philosophical conversations and engagement in a causal and informal public context. There are many talks and discussions being hosted during the week of April 23 and April 29th throughout the Burlington area and Vermont, and even parts of the Northeast. Check out the website for a listing. PPW: https://www.publicphilosophyweek.org/
I will be sponsoring a conversation on the theme of civic engagement. I am particularly interested in hearing from residents of Shelburne who engage in local politics, commissions, boards, and committees, or who otherwise consider themselves involved in our community through any form of civic and community engagement. The talk will be held at the Shelburne Vineyard on Saturday, April 29th at 6:00 – 7:30. Shelburne Vineyard: https://www.shelburnevineyard.com/events-list/phil-talk
Here's the blurb. I hope to see you there!
Public Philosophy Week: The Philosophy of Civic Engagement
Frustration and discontent with national politics has grown; volunteerism and engagement in local politics have decreased. Why? What is the value and purpose of civic engagement and involvement with local politics and community engagement generally? Why should we stay engaged? Is it worth the time? Is it a "duty", a "hobby", a rt of a good life, rational self-interest, etc.?
Join Mike Ashooh, a philosophy teacher at UVM and Chair of the Shelburne Selectboard, for a casual conversation about the value, purpose and meaning of civic engagement - while drinking wine at the
Shelburne Vineyard.
No tickets or reservations needed.
