Jazzy piece by Ravel with violin & piano; new Kenji Bunch composition featuring French horn, viola & violins; plus late Beethoven quartet for violins, viola and cello. Notice offered by C Murray.
Craftsbury Chamber Players - Concert II - Wednesday, July 23 at 8:00 PM, UVM’s Recital Hall, Redstone Campus, Burlington; and
Thursday, July 24 at 8:00 PM, Hardwick Town House, Hardwick
The concert opens with Ravel’s Sonata in g minor for violin and piano (1927) played by Mary Rowell on the violin and Sayaka Tanikawa on piano. Ravel was fascinated with American jazz and blues at this time, and his music is saturated with extended chords, scales and modes, creating an accessible, yet refined beauty. This work is famous for its virtuosic features, including violin fireworks.
The second piece – “26.2” for horn and string trio by Craftsbury Chamber Players “resident’ composer and violist, Kenji Bunch – is based on a New York Marathon: 26.2 miles, from Staten Island, over the Verrazano Bridge, through Brooklyn and into Manhattan run by the composer and his wife, pianist Monica Ohuchi. It is performed by Joy Worland (French horn), Mary Rowell (violin), Frances Rowell (cello) and Kenji.
The concert concludes with Beethoven’s Quartet in a minor, Op. 132 for strings, performed by Katherine Winterstein (violin), Mary Rowell (violin), Kenji Bunch (viola) and Frances Rowell (cello). This quartet is from the composer’s late period, and is set in five movements, with the lengthiest movement and the most spiritual in the middle.
It is a tour-de-force work of art.
Tickets can be purchased at the door beginning at 7:30: $25 for adults and $10 for students with ID. Children 12 and under free.
