The deadline for the League of Women Voters of Vermont scholarships is quickly approaching. May 1 is the last day to submit online applications for the Winona Smith Scholarship.

Up to four scholarships of $1,500 each are available to qualified high school seniors. Applications can be completed online, www.lwvofvt.org/winona-smith-vermont-scholarship-application. Students need to submit two essays (500 words), one on issues concerning voting rights, and the other on the impact of a recent civic, national, or world event. A letter of recommendation from a teacher is also required, www.lwvofvt.org/recommend-scholarship-applicant.

The scholarship can be used towards continuation of education in any accredited vocational-technical or trade school and two- or four-year college or university. Scholarship recipients will be announced June 1.

Last year, LWV scholarships were awarded to students from Bellows Free Academy, Green Mountain Union, Hartford, Stowe High Schools. Here is what 2020 recipient Audrey has to say about the Winona Smith Scholarship, www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqocTBTpMmg.

Any questions can be emailed to Scholarship Coordinator Becky Miller, lwvofvt.edfund@gmail.com.
