As we navigate our way through the current iteration of populism in the United States, Europe provides a cautionary tale. The current political situation in the Czech Republic, a small country in the very heart of Europe, historically considered the crossroads between the West and the East, is the reflection of the latest developments in the entire European Union, currently facing a serious crisis, caused by Brexit, a refugee crisis and the rise of populist tendencies. The lecture will address all these issues, with the further focus on the Czech Republic and other countries of Central Europe, as well as the impact on the United States and the global economy.

Dr. Nekola will address populism through the lens of the Czech Republic and other countries of Central Europe. There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions and to consider global implications.

Dr. Martin Nekola PhD, received his doctorate in political science at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. His research is focused on non-democratic regimes, the era of Communism, Czech communities abroad, and the East-European anti-communist exiles in the USA during the Cold War. From time to time he participates in election observation missions organized by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). He is a member of the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), has published more than three hundred articles and 20 books.

The Windham World Affairs Council (WWAC) is an independent, nonpartisan organization with an all-volunteer board of Brattleboro-area community members. Its mission is to engage the community in fact-based dialogue about global issues and challenges through free and widely accessible monthly lectures, monthly 'Members & Friends Salons' and youth outreach. Its goal is to contribute to the creation of a peaceful world in which citizens can participate knowledgeably in public affairs and make informed choices in elections.
