Dr Greg Rasmussen is the founder and Director of the Painted Dog Research Trust (PDRT) and has been working with painted dogs in Zimbabwe since 1988. Greg knows how to build a conservation organization from the ground up and he sees the impacts it can have, not only on the endangered species it is striving to protect, but on the staff and their families, nearby communities, and the ecosystem as a whole.
Greg's passion for his work, sense of justice,
and ability to work well with many people are the reasons that we've become friends. I'm pleased to be hosting this event that compliments other Charlotte initiatives in Africa.
I, Ebeth Scatchard, finally met Greg in 2018 when my brother and I traveled to Uganda and Zimbabwe to go to the Malayaka House and PDRT. My brother, a marine biologist, who tracks elephant seals in California, sees the plight of Painted Dogs in Africa as similar to that of the elephant seals in the 1880s when they faced extinction. Greg and my brother collaborate on figuring out means of tracking their respective animals. Sadly animal trapping in Vermont is another unfortunate connection.
Dr. Rasmussen is currently on his annual Painted Dog awareness and fundraising tour, visiting zoos, universities and conservation organizations in the United States and Europe.
