What is Pysanka? A pysanka (plural "pysanky") is a Ukrainian Easter Egg, decorated using an ancient process involving wax and special dyes.

A pysanka is the most loved decorated egg of Ukraine. It comes from the word pysaty, which means 'to write'.

Designs are drawn on the egg shell in an ancient batik process with hot wax, followed by submerging the egg in dye.

A pysanka of many colours is dyed multiple times, with wax designs drawn on the egg between dyeings. Areas of the shell covered in wax resist dye, whereas un-waxed areas absorb dye and turn subsequently darker with longer periods of dyeing.

A pysanka is completed by melting off the wax to reveal its beauty.

Ukrainians have been decorating eggs for thousands of years.

Legend has it that as long as pysanky are decorated, goodness will prevail over evil throughout the world.

About the NY installation " The Pysanka: A symbol of Hope" : Together with the Ukrainian Institute of America (UIA) and the World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations (WFUWO), ethnographer and artist Sofika Zielyk has conceived a communal and participatory exhibition of Ukrainian Easter eggs.

This initiative encourages people of all backgrounds, beliefs and ages, including children, to enrich a living installation of pysanky by contributing their own egg, hand decorated with traditional Ukrainian techniques and motifs.

This installation is an ongoing, living, and evolving endeavor. As pysanky continue to arrive and their numbers increase, so will the symbolic power of the installation grow.  Click here for more information Pysanka – A Symbol of Hope (ukrainianinstitute)
