The seventh annual Bach organ marathon, at Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier, will take place on Sunday, March 19, 2023, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Donations will benefit the Governor's Institute on the Arts, a division of the Governor's Institute of Vermont.
Seven organists will play the glorious organ music of Johann Sebastian Bach on the 1972 Karl Wilhelm organ.In addition to celebrating the music of J.S. Bach, Christ Church is also celebrating the organ's 50th year. Led by Jack Russell, then director of music, and the Rev. David Brown, the church decided to have an instrument built in the north German style of the late 1600's, with direct mechanical action, pipes in the German style, and no expression boxes or electric pistons. This was the first instrument that Karl Wilhelm, of Quebec, built in the eastern United States.
This year's featured organists include :
Evan Allen, organist of First Baptist Church in Burlington
Mark Howe, director of music at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Burlington
Lubbert Gnodde,organbuilder and organist at Our Lady of Snows Roman Catholic Church in Woodstock
Lisa Willems, former organist at St. Denis Roman Catholic Church in Hanover, New Hampshire
Ernest Drown, former organist at Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, now at First Congregational Church, Lebanon, New Hampshire;
Christopher McWilliams, director of music at Bethany Congregational Church in Montpelier;
and
Lynnette Combs, director of music at Christ Church Montpelier.
The audience is invited to come and go as they please during the marathon, which begins at 2.
The Governor's Institute on the Arts encourages creativity, collaboration with professional artists, and experiencing the world in new and inspiring ways, offering residencies on Vermont college campuses each summer. This year the artists gather from June 25 to July 9 on the campus of Castleton College.
