Join Bird Diva Bridget Butler for a monthly Slow Birding Outing that will offer up a mindful approach to birding that will connect you with birds, the land, and yourself. Bridget will lead you on an outcome-free outing that will focus on getting to know birds beyond their identification.
During each outing, we'll start by getting to know who's on the landscape that particular day and practice sharing our observations as a group in a way that uplifts each participant no matter their level of knowledge or experience birding. Next, we'll settle into a sit-spot session with prompts that Bridget will offer the group to use. We'll wrap up by coming back together and sharing our observations, feelings, and wonderings with the whole group. This will be the general flow for each monthly outing with some variation depending on the site, weather, and whatever might present itself.
Participants should dress for the weather and at least 30 minutes sitting in place. Consider bringing a portable chair, journal, hot beverage or water, binoculars, and whatever will make you most comfortable sitting in place. Bridget will have binoculars and portable chairs for participants to borrow. Each session will last between 2 and 3 hours to allow for the group experience to flow naturally.
Bridget will strive to make each outing as accessible as possible. If you have any accessibility needs, please let her know in the registration form and she'll do her best to accommodate you. Birding is for everyone and Slow Birding is meant to be accessible to all!
Group size is limited to 15 participants.
Sliding scale offered: $25/$30/$35

We'll be visiting one of my favorite spots in Franklin county, the Fairfield Swamp Wildlife Management Area (WMA). This is a 1,376-acre WMA that features mixed forests and a large swamp. It's a beautiful spot to visit year-round and is one of the places where I have a satellite sit spot. We'll have a short walk into our gathering area where we'll spread out near the swamp edge for our sit-spot session.
Because parking is limited, we'll be parking down in Saint Albans and carpooling to the WMA. There are no facilities at this site. The trails here are greater than 3 feet wide and flat with a naturally packed trail surface. With snowy conditions boots and snowshoes or boots and ice cleats are helpful but not required. I'll provide a trail condition update the day before the outing.
Cancellation policy: participants may cancel within 48 hours of the outing for a full-refund or credit. Less than 48 hours notice and the participant will be credited for a future outing.
