Artisanal gold mining currently accounts for the greatest percentage of mercury emissions in the world. Do you know where your gold jewelry comes from and why mercury is used to extract the gold? Do you use pottery with a lead glaze? What happens to all of the used lead-acid batteries in the world? Join us to learn more.

Don and Annie Smith-Jones provide pro bono environmental assistance to a NGO that is focused on addressing the epidemic of lead and mercury poisoning throughout economically depressed areas of the world. They will discuss their work, which includes helping to clean Mexican artisanal ceramic workshops that continue to use leaded glaze and getting the potters to switch to a lead-free glaze. They have also made numerous trips to Senegal to clean up a site where 30+ children died from lead poisoning caused by the improper "recycling" of used lead-acid batteries (ULAB).
