Next Friday, February 24, and Saturday, February 25, at 7:30 PM, Dan DeWalt will be playing an original soundtrack on the piano for Oscar Micheaux's 1920 silent film "Within Our Gates." The show will be at the Williamsville Hall at 35 Dover Rd in Williamsville. Admission is by donation and will raise money for the Hall, which is ADA-compliant.
Micheaux was one of this nation's first Black film directors and had his own production company. "Within Our gates" is his response to the racist film "Birth of a Nation" that came out a year earlier. The film confronts personal and systemic racism and is a grim reminder of the problems we still face today.
