"Why We Should Blame New England's Fish for Capitalism", by Zachary Bennett
Summary: Norwich Professor Zachary Bennett will explore the important role nature played in the 18th century, (rather than decisions of the people), for society's transition to capitalism
Text, letter

Debates and protests over the toxic traits of capitalism are not uniquely modern phenomenon. Eighteenth-century New Englanders were torn over what type of society they wanted to live in: a more traditional moral economy, or the increased wealth and comfort of the emerging market economy? Specifically, public debates over preserving the annual fish runs versus damming the rivers to power large mills were frequent. But, in this presentation, Professor Bennett will show how in fact it is nature herself that holds more responsibility for society's transition to capitalism rather than the decisions of the people.

This event will be hybrid. The presenter will present in-person at the Homestead Museum. You can attend live, in-person at the Homestead Museum, or you can attend remotely on Zoom.
