Walk in the Woods: Balancing Land Use and Biodiversity at the Foxglove Farm Tree Farm
February 25, 2023
10AM-12Noon
Leicester, VT
Mark, Katie, Stella, Eleanor, and Emmett Raishart will be our hosts as we tour their Tree Farm property at the western edge of the Green Mountains in Leicester, Vermont. Foxglove Farm has been a Tree Farm since 2016, and since that time has been all about a hands-on experience for the entire family. The Raishart family has tried to balance the many values our forests provide such as wood, wildlife, water, recreation, and of course biodiversity through active management of their land. We will learn about several recent projects including, a harvest to release sugar maple and regeneration; erosion control; girdling to increase snag habitat and leaving brush high to enhance downed woody debris; mast tree release; protecting the wetland and stream corridors; and of course sugaring. Their sugaring operation is enrolled in Audubon Vermont's Bird Friendly Maple program. The sap could be flowing so you might even get a tasty treat! The Raishart's are also one of 4 nominees for 2023 Vermont Tree Farmer of the Year. Terrain is relatively gentle, but likely wet, so wear appropriate footwear!
Pre-registration is encouraged, so we know how many people to expect. The property is located at 777 Delorm Road, Leicester, VT 05733
