Attention: Residents of Glens Falls, Queensbury, Kingsbury, part of Moreau, West Fort Ann
In 2021, Sterigenics at 84 Park Road in Kingsbury, N.Y. received a letter from the EPA stating that the facility would required to submit data for ethylene oxide emissions to EPA's Toxic Release Inventory starting in 2023.
EtO is a colorless gas used to sterilize medical devices. It is highly volatile and carcinogenic, linked to cancers such as lymphoma and breast cancer and to mutagenic changes to the DNA of children.
The letter stated there was a population of about 47,634 people including 2,858 children under five years of age living within a five-mile radius of the facility. 20 schools are also within this area.
The letter went on, "Because EtO is mutagenic and children may be more susceptible to the harmful effects of mutagenic substances, the proximity of young children to a facility using ethylene oxide concerns the EPA."
