American Legion High School Constitutional Speech Contest
Open and free to the public:
When: Sat. Feb. 18
Where: Vergennes American Legion Post 14, Armory Lane
Time: Arrive by 10 AM. No one will be allowed entrance while the student is speaking.
The American Legion High School Constitutional Speech Contest exits to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. This program presents participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation's laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.
Open to Vermont students of grades 9-12, the contest requires students to deliver 8-10 minute speeches based on the Constitution, followed by the Assigned Topic of one of 4 specific Articles or Amendments of the Constitution. They speak on the Assigned Topic 3-5 minutes.
The winner of this contest will go on to the District Contest scheduled Sat. Feb. 25 at Bristol Post 19.
The Vermont Department American Legion finals will be held Sat. Mar. 4th at the Pavilion in Montpelier. There will be 3 total contestants.
April 2023 will see one of these 3 student go to Indianapolis for the National Speech Finals. There will winners from each state of the union plus France, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Three rounds of speeches will be given putting each group of winners in contention for the top scholarships of $25,500, second and third place receives $22,500 and $20,000 respectively.
