The public is invited to come to a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Tuesday February 21, from 5:30-7 PM, in Willard Hall at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 313 Main Street, Chester, VT. The outdoor entrance to Willard Hall is down the wooden stairway toward the rear of the church building. The menu is pancakes, real maple syrup, sausage, fruit salad, and beverages. Family is invited, and free-will donations are welcome.
Shrove Tuesday is also known by other names, such as Carnival, Pancake Day in England and Fat Tuesday (literally Mardi Gras in French). Whatever it's called, it is the day before the start of Ash Wednesday and Lent, when Christians participate in 40 days of fasting, penance, and praying in preparation for Easter. Starting around A.D. 600, Pope St. Gregory prohibited Christians from eating meat and animal products, such as eggs and fats, during Lent; and St. Augustine of Canterbury imposed the same fasting rules in England. Pancakes were an easy way to use up those ingredients, but some have greatly expanded the merriment factor of parades, parties, and feasting. At St. Luke's the simple meal is traditionally prepared by men of the parish.
