Castleton resident, Juanita Karpf, will be speaking about her research and new book, "Performing Racial Uplift: E. Azalia Hackley and African American Activism in the Postbellum to Pre-Harlem Era", (University Press of Mississippi). Ms. Karpf is an independent scholar, played cello professionally, taught music in grades K-12, and held positions at the University of Georgia, Oberlin College, and Case-Western Reserve University. Her research has appeared in such publications as American Music, Black Music Research, and Popular Music and Society.
