The Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence is thrilled to be co-hosting a screening of Backlash: Misogyny in the Digital Age on Tuesday, February 7th at 6:30 PM at the Statehouse. This documentary takes a relevant look at the impact and scourge of cyberviolence. Our world's digital landscape is rapidly changing how people interact and speak out about all aspects of our lives and has emboldened and perpetuated misogyny and violence against women.
Vermont is not immune to this changing landscape and few in our community know this more intimately than former Vermont State Rep. Kiah Morris. Kiah was first elected in 2014 as the only black female member of the Vermont House. She served her community for two consecutive terms but then had to resign in 2018 following months of severe online harassment that then escalated into her physical world. Through it all, Kiah has continued to be a vocal advocate for justice system reforms that protect all women. Kiah's story, along with the stories of three other female leaders in government and advocacy from across the globe are featured in this groundbreaking new documentary. It has already been making waves as it debuts at many international film festivals, including winning the Jury's special mention at the Human Rights Film Festival in Berlin.
The 80-minute film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Kiah Morris, Guylaine Maroist, the co-director of Backlash; and former State Representative Maxine Grad, a champion for ending gender-based violence. Space is limited so please register now to reserve your spot at:
