Yoga Nidra literally means yogic sleep. It is an ancient technique where the practitioner enters the deep states of conscious relaxation, the key word here being conscious. It is a systematic practice of moving awareness from our external world to the inner world. Practiced before sleep, it calms the mind and nervous system, allowing for release of anxiety, more deep, vital and restful sleep as well as more awareness of the dream state. Experienced in Shavasana (resting pose,) Yoga Nidra feels similar to a guided meditation, but is a specific sequence of directed queues which train the brain to repattern away from busy mind, into deep states of relaxation and awareness. If you suffer from stress, issues with insomnia, or simply want to have better dreams, this yogic form will be meaningful.
