Come and Meet Abenaki Leader/Educator Judy Dow

Richmond Racial Equity invites you to a public presentation and discussion at 7:00 on Wednesday, January 18 with Judy Dow of the Winooski Abenaki.

She will discuss how we as individuals and as a community can engage more deeply with the land we live on through the Indigenous practice of land acknowledgment.

Judy is the Executive Director of Gedakina, an organization that provides many resources and opportunities for Indigenous populations, especially youth and women. Judy has worked as an independent educator for over 30 years, harnessing her degrees in Native Studies, Education, and Teaching for Social Justice. In 2004 she received the Governor's Heritage Award for Outstanding Educator. She is also an environmentalist, consultant, cultural specialist, author, and basketmaker, conducting classes and workshops for students of all ages.

In November 2022 she led Brattleboro residents in a Community Land Acknowledgment, fusing their stories and art to honor the land and its inhabitants past and present.

In a second, in person, session, Judy will lead us here in Richmond in a similar exercise of pride and gratitude. We are planning that session (date to be determined), in collaboration with Radiate Art Space and Richmond Racial Equity.

Hope you can join in this interesting discussion.
