Readers of the Most Costly Journey, you are welcome to gather for a discussion of this comics anthology Tuesday evening at 6:30 at the Waterbury Public Library. Even if you haven't picked up a copy of the Vermont Reads book, please come. There will be a book for you to take home.
So many themes present themselves- dedication to work; perseverance in times of struggle; sacrifice and love for family; loneliness, isolation, and hope; courage and strength and much more. The stories are many and unique of migrants from Mexico and Central America that have braved the crossing of the border to seek a better life in North America, and in this case, Vermont. These are our neighbors, though many invisible. The Most Costly Journey ( (El Viaje más Caro) documents these oral stories through the graphic medium.
Author and graphic novelist Alison Bechdel calls El Viaje mas caro a "profound act of witness." 6:30-7:30 PM, January 17th in the library's SAL room.
Wednesday, January 25th also at 6:30, we will be showing the documentary "Under the Cloak of Darkness" which also features Vermont and its Mexican farm worker population.
Both programs are made possible by the Vermont Humanities Council.
