About the Red Mill Gallery Exhibition: Expanding Universe, Collapsing Time by Kathy Black
We embrace a sunny day to explore and play. We look to the sun and stars to see the nearest pieces of the solar system, explore the universe, and stretch our understanding of our place in the enormity of the universe and the intimate life close at hand.
In this body of work I investigate our changing understanding of the universe and how it connects to the everyday. Our language for the physical universe is rapidly evolving, from deep space, dark matter, and string theory. Our visual language is changing to bridge this gigantic stretch of conceptual space and time in which we live. In this work, landscapes and still life merge with maps and writing, names for place, space, and cataloging. I play with the language of maps and with words for our social, physical and conceptual understanding of our place in the universe to see what it reveals.
Everyday, new scientific information is gathered and theories are reworked. Our shared sense of distance, space, and time has had to change. It can seem that we don't have the capacity to hold the world close at hand, the mundane, alongside the vastness of space and the shocking new information brought into our lives through the Hubble telescope and other explorations. Yet, celebrating the landscape and night sky converging with a catalog of space and time elements may help find a place for contemplation.
