If you attended the affordable housing summit last fall, you may remember mention of Paul Searls's book Repeopling Vermont: The Paradox of Development in the Twentieth Century. The Mad River Libraries have invited Dr. Searls to give a free talk about his research, which explains how we got where we are today.
Dr. Searls will share how Vernont's development unfolded, tracing the competing efforts of officials to promote and conserve Vermont's natural beauty while attracting business and industry. Today, the consequences of these historic decisions include a shortage of affordable housing and lack of economic and racial diversity in Vermont. The paradox of development also remains. How do we balance progress with tradition?
The talk will be held at the Joslin Memorial Library on Monday, January 23, at 5:30 pm. Refreshments will be provided. The talk will be followed by a question and answer session and discussion about the future of development in our community.
