Every year, Vermont State Parks offers a series of First Day Hikes led by Forests, Parks and Recreation staff or local volunteers. See the full list of First Day Hikes here: (http://vtstateparks.blogspot.com/2022/12/start-your-new-year-on-right-foot-with.html)
This year, I decided to offer a guided hike to the emerald ash borer (EAB) infested sections of LR Jones State Forest in Plainfield where there are also ongoing releases of the three species of parasitic wasps that feed on EAB. Seeing these infested ash (mostly white ash, but I have seem some large black ash) is sobering and getting out in the winter allows us to see high into the crown of the tree.
Do look at the entire list of First Day Hikes to explore a state park or forest near you. The details of the LR Jones hike are below. There are several loops that include infested ash, but we will just address one of them, likely a 2 mile hike on uneven terrain off-trail. Bring tall waterproof boots and snow shoes if you own them.
