On Christmas Eve at 5:00 p.m., 1st Presbyterian Church of Barre, Vermont will celebrate Christmas with a candlelight service based on the University of Cambridge, King's College Chapel Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. The full service was introduced in 1918 to bring a more imaginative approach to worship. It was first broadcast in 1928 and is now broadcast to millions of people around the world. This year, the PCUSA Presbyterian Mission Agency arranged a version of the service, which 1st Presbyterian Barre will use on December 24 at their Christmas Eve Candlelight Service.
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is traditionally celebrated on or near Christmas Eve and includes carols and readings from the Bible. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings or lessons from Genesis, the prophetic books, and the Gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns, and anthems. The service will feature Emma Cerutti and Dan Krymkowski as soloists with Dan Krymkowski as organist.
The service is offered in person at 1st Presbyterian at 19 S. Seminary Street, Barre and via zoom at their website fpcbarre.org. , "Click here for Sunday worship." All are welcome to join in this joyful, traditional celebration of the birth of Christ.
