Dear Neighbors,

This coming Monday, the City Council will convene its second of two scheduled meeting for the month of December.

You are welcome to attend the Council meeting in person at Contois Auditorium OR Remotely via ZOOM at the following link: https://zoom.us/j/98955956480

You can also join us via Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLljLFn4BZd2PwCge7lNoKug676jIf_iUA

You can sign up for public forum via this link: https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/citycouncil/publicforum or in person by completing a sign-up form inside Contois.

We will begin our meeting at 6pm with the swearing in of the newly elected East District City Councilor, Maea Brandt. Congratulations to Councilor-elect Brandt on her election to the City Council.

Following the swearing in, Councilor Brandt will join us at the Council table, and we will continue our meeting with her. Our first item on our agenda will be an executive session where we will get an update from the acting City Attorney on various pending litigation.

After public forum which will begin at 7:30pm, we have four items on our deliberative agenda, as follows:

• The Council held a hearing on the citizen complaint regarding Orlando's Bar and Lounge in early November. The Council has made a decision on this complaint and we will be voting on that decision on Monday.

• We have a resolution on addressing gun violence. This resolution came to us from the Board of Health, went to our Public Safety Committee and is back to the Council for a vote.

• We are voting on an ordinance regarding vacant buildings and dangerous structures. This ordinance will tighten up the rules regarding unsafe structures. Working with the Fire Department and others, I worked on this in direct response to the 199 King Street fires, a second fire that never should have happened had there been stronger provisions in place. This proposed ordinance change is in response to the blight that a vacant damaged building creates in a neighborhood. As well, given the housing crisis we have, we need to do all we can to encourage housing and for residential buildings not to be vacant.

• Our last item will be a vote on the Charter language that will put into words the redistricting map that we voted on by resolution last Monday and passed the Council unanimously. This language, or a shortened version, will appear on the Town Meeting Day 2023 ballot.

I would encourage you to check out our agenda on board docs at http://www.boarddocs.com/vt/burlingtonvt/Board.nsf/Public.

As always, I welcome your questions, concerns, and comments, so please be in touch. Your voice matters and I am grateful for your input.

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.

My best,
Karen
