A message from Sharon Kelley, Zoning Administrator:
The Town of Essex Planning Commission will be meeting tonight at 6:00 p.m. to discuss 2 items. The 1st item is a continued Public Hearing (from 9/8/22) regarding a Sketch Plan on 60 Colonel Page Road for a 9-unit residential subdivision. As a result from a site inspection held on 9/28/22, the applicants have changed the configuration of the lots and access is now proposed to enter off Chapin Road. This was done, in part, to better protect the view corridor.
The 2nd application is a Preliminary Plan for an 8-unit, 5 lot Planned Unit Development (PUD) located at 137 Towers Road in the Agricultural-Residential, Low Density Residential & Scenic Resource Protection Overlay (SRPO) Zones. Sketch Plan approval was granted to Negesse & Juanita Gutema on December 9, 2021.

The Community Development Department (Planning & Zoning) continues to be short staffed, however a new Planner was hired and started a week ago. His name is Kent Johnson. Kent has spent the majority of the past 17 years working in a variety of planning roles for the City of Ithaca, New York. Kent brings more than 21 years of planning and architecture experience with most of those years spent working in the municipal realm. He also recently completed a four-month Fulbright grant in Finland where he shared designs and methods to support the accessibility needs of people with disabilities wishing to visit national parks in Finland. In addition, the Administrative Assistant position is vacant but we have a candidate that is going through the hiring process. Hopefully this position will start up soon. Thank you all for your patience with our department during this timely hiring process.
Another reminder to compost! Check out this webinar that CSWD conducted last year on Backyard Composting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLYtqwGj8Ro With winter approaching, it is important to emphasize good composting practices.
Have a Happy Holiday Season!
