Coming up Thanksgiving morning on Central Vermont Community Radio — what we can learn about what's needed to relocalize in Vermont from a lifelong nonviolent social justice activist and teacher and from a solar power cooperative in Sweden.
9:00 - 10:00 am
George Lakey has been a recurring guest on the show, talking about the importance of building a society based on equality (see his book Viking Economics: How the Scandinavians got it right and how we can, too) and how to build movements to protect democracy from authoritarians (see his book HOW WE WIN: A Guide to Nonviolent Direct Action Campaigning). His new memoir, Dancing with History: A Life for Peace and Justice, is out in December, in time to read during holiday downtime and to give to people who may be inspired by it. We talk about what peace organizers can learn from the war movie The Bridge on the River Kwai, how climate activists can reach out to coal miners, and what the 85-year-old Lakey can envision for his last dance.

Sweden has phased out landfills and planned to let the old ones lie undisturbed for a century or so—but in southern Sweden, some people got together to turn the old landfill into a cooperatively owned solar park. (It's even open to investors from outside Sweden.) Because Swedes pay for their electricity according to the current market price, and the Russian war on Ukraine has made electricity prices extremely high and volatile, investing in solar panels is proving to be a good hedge on energy prices. One of the board members, Diedrik Fälth, explains how it works, and why people are finding they have to organize in non-profits to make this economic model work.
