Equal is Equal, Fair is Fair Book Talk

Past event
Nov 14, 2022, 6:30 to 7:30 PM

If you're interested in issues of fairness and equity, please consider joining a virtual discussion hosted by the Kellogg Hubbard Library about my book, Equal Is Equal, Fair Is Fair, this coming Monday, Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m.

I started my research for the book shortly after retiring as executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Vermont in 2016. I wanted to untangle a lifetime of questions about the concept of equity — the notion that we're all created equal — and about government's role in ensuring we're treated fairly. I focus on three topics that dominated Vermont politics during the last twenty-five years: school funding, same-sex marriage, and health care. Vermont made landmark advances in two of the three while gaining impressive, though less than satisfying, results in the third.

To register for Monday's event, go to the library's Adult Programs page (https://www.kellogghubbard.org/adult-programs). Scroll down, past the poster of the month's activities, to the "November 2022" heading. Under the heading are descriptions for each remaining program in November. At the end of the paragraph describing the Equal Is Equal, Fair Is Fair program is a 'CLICK HERE' link, which will take you to the Zoom registration page. Once you register, you'll receive the link for the event.

Writing the book was a challenge, but really rewarding. It helped me to untie the catch phrases "equal," "equity," and "equality," and to realize they are not the same. I also came to better appreciate the power and influence people committed to a cause can have. (Worcester was a plaintiff in the Brigham education funding lawsuit.) Thanks to Michelle Singer at Kellogg Hubbard Library for organizing the event. Hope you can join in this Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Equal Is Equal, Fair Is Fair can be purchased at Bear Pond Books in Montpelier, or online. An e-version is also available. The Equal Is Equal website (www.equalisequal.com/purchase/) has links for keeping the book purchase local.
