Although Wilde labelled it "a trivial comedy for serious people," Earnest is zingy satire—far from trivial. In a time when class distinctions seem to be accentuated, hardly blurred, this comedic gem is a welcome poke in the fleshy gut of classist pretension. Through Wilde's Victorian lens we can see we're not the only generation to experience the foibles of classism, the perils of strutting peacock feathers.
