Opening the program are quite contrasting settings of secular words by Pietro Metastasio (1698-1782). Metastasio was the most celebrated writer of opera scripts (librettos) of the 18th century. His texts were considered the bedrock of stylistic reform and development in opera and music theater of his era. His approach to emotional expression was rational and focused. The "Nocturnes" are simple songs of love, lust, betrayal and reconciliation simply and beautifully set to Mozart's music.

Mozart's musical and dramatic genius also bring alive the range of emotions associated with grieving. Fear, bargaining, mourning, and healing come alive in a musical tour de force. One of the chief features of the enduring success of the work is not musical. It is a work that was left unfinished at Mozart's death. He had sketched out nearly all of the work, but it was completed and prepared for a first performance in 1792 by his friend and colleague, Franz Sussmayr (1766-1803), based on the sketches. Although there have been several attempts to complete the work, the Sussmayr completion is by far the most often performed version.

Aurora Chamber Singers' May concert, entitled "All Generations Will Call Me Blessed", presents medieval, renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, modern and contemporary music dedicated to the biblical character Mary, mother of Jesus. The program includes Gregorian chant, motets, and cantatas. It was originally scheduled for the pandemic spring of 2020, and we are delighted to be able to present it at last this season.
