I'm a snob when it comes to local productions of hit Broadway shows. This past week, I had to eat those words.

On Tuesday night I was allowed to watch a rehearsal of my favorite Sondheim play, "Into the Woods"; his play that combines Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel. and Jack and the Beanstalk in a bizarre, comedic, musical way that appeals to both young and old. The rehearsal hall was a warehouse, decorated in warehouse chic and the players were dressed in boho gym. "This is not going to go well," went through my head

The play opens with the title number of the show, "Into the Woods" FROM THE FIRST NOTE, I WAS TRANSPORTED! IF I CLOSED MY EYES, I COULD BELIEVE I WAS IN A BROADWAY THEATRE. THE VOICES WERE MAGICAL. THEIR TIMING AND INTERACTION WAS PERFECT. THE COMEDY AND PATHOS THAT WEAVES THROUGH THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION WAS ORIGINAL, AND IF THE TWO HEADPIECES THAT I SAW WERE AN INDICATION OF THE COSTUMING, IT WILL BE EXQUISITE.

My health doesn't allow me to gather indoors with large crowds, so I won't get to see it, in all it's finery at the Flynn, but, you can. If you love great theatre, Sondheim, great music, and unbelievable voices or just want a great night out after 2 years of isolation, go see "Into the Woods".
