Teaching about Slavery, Whiteness, Racism, and the Underground Railroad in the North

• Target audience: educators grades 2–12
• Professional learning hours: 6
• Certificate of completion provided on official letterhead
• Tea/coffee and light snacks provided

What is the history of slavery in Vermont? Why are the stories of Black Vermonters undervalued or completely absent from most local history texts? Why is it generally believed that the Underground Railroad was organized by White people when it was in fact organized by Black Northerners? These are the types of questions explored in school programs at Rokeby. More often than not, these concepts are completely new to students. While they are perhaps equipped to speak on slavery in the South, understanding the history of racism and resistance in their own backyard is a foreign concept.

This on-site, professional development workshop provides educators a day to unpack the (wide scope) process and experience of teaching emotion-laden topics like slavery and racism, reflect with each other, and learn new ways to teach these subjects while providing physiological care, empathy and honesty to their students. Educators will evaluate lesson plans, learn techniques in facilitated dialogue, study primary source documents and tour the historic site to learn how Rokeby has utilized it's resources to deeply engage learners of all ages.
