Earl Hatley, Grand Riverkeeper and member of the Waterkeeper's Alliance, hosts the documentary, "Tar Creek," a film about the worst environmental disaster you've never heard of: the Tar Creek Superfund site; to be held at BALE Commons, South Royalton. Once one of the largest lead and zinc mines on the planet, Tar Creek is now home to more than 40 square miles of environmental devastation in northeastern Oklahoma: acid mine water in the creeks, stratospheric lead poisoning in the children, and sinkholes that melt backyards and ball fields. As we learn about these minerals that are needed to ramp up the so-called green technologies, we can still see today Tar Creek residents fighting for decontamination, environmental justice, and ultimately, the buy-out and relocation of their homes to safer ground. Following the film, Earl, who is featured in the film and is of Cherokee and Abenaki lineage, will share thoughts and respond to questions. This film is part of the Indigenous Wisdom series running at BALE Commons this fall and winter. Always free.
