If public speaking makes you nervous, you are not alone. Noted social scientist Jerry Seinfeld has observed that "to the average person, if you have to be at a funeral, you would rather be in the casket than doing the eulogy." Fear or discomfort with public speaking can take many forms -- holding back your ideas at a work meeting, failing to speak up for important causes, or even struggling to make connections with new people at social events.
If you would like to build confidence, change your relationship to public speaking, and become a strong leader, Savvy Speakers Toastmasters Club of Barre, Vermont is the place for you. Toastmasters provides a mutually supportive and positive learning environment, with many opportunities to practice and receive individualized feedback on the skills and techniques of effective communication and leadership.
For myself, when I started practicing at Toastmasters to overcome my reluctance to speak up at work meetings, I was struck by how many people mentioned a difference in my confidence, quite quickly. I barely remember those feelings of being invisible and resentful that made me visit Toastmasters in the first place -- instead, I have the satisfaction of seeking out new communication and leadership challenges with the unending support of Savvy Speakers.
Savvy Speakers meets twice a month, on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, from 6:00 - 7:30 pm ET. Meetings on first Tuesdays are online only, while meetings on third Tuesdays are hybrid, with an in-person option in downtown Barre. Upcoming meetings are:
November 1 (Online)
November 15 (Hybrid)
December 6 (Online)
