Burlington's Historic Affordable Houses & Neighborhoods
Saturday, November 5, 9:30 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.
Generator Makerspace, 40 Sears Lane, Burlington
In the first half of the 20th century, a surge in construction of modest kit and plan-built houses left its stamp on suburban America. These houses, economical to build and with all the modern conveniences, placed home ownership within reach of a growing middle class.
This workshop will present the history of these small houses in the national and local context of moderately priced, affordable housing of the time and explore the lessons they offer on the development today of affordable housing and neighborhoods that minimize resource use and maximize efficiency. Homeowners, architects, builders, planners, and real estate professionals will find its content useful in preserving the character-defining features of these houses and applying them to contemporary design.
