Come join us for a Samhain ritual to remember the dead and thank the sleeping fields, forests, and gardens, at Bread and Puppet on Tuesday Nov 1 at 5:30 pm.
Samhain is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and beginning of winter. The souls of dead kin were thought to revisit their homes seeking hospitality, and a place was set at the table for them during a Samhain meal.
We will dress like death, make a procession through the field to the pine forest, stopping along the way to honor the dead and sing to the trees, fields, and sky. At the pine forest, all are invited to make altars for their dead. Biodegradable only please! Food, drink, flowers, moss, rocks, shells— no glass, plastic, foil or other wrappings. Bring a song, poem or letter to share if you like. We will end with a bonfire and bread.
This is a participatory event, not a performance. Wear black or white. Bring an instrument, if you like. Fiddles, hurdy gurdies and music boxes especially welcome. Bring a candle lantern. The event will take place rain or shine, and will involve walking, so dress accordingly.
