Greenmount Cemetery Tour with Preservation Burlington

Past event
Oct 23, 2022, 10 AM to 12 PM

Join us on October 23rd at 10 am when the Old East End Neighborhood Coalition and Preservation Burlington team up to provide a memorable tour of one of Burlington's oldest and historically significant sites, Greenmount Cemetery. The tour will highlight the history of Burlington and the Old East End through the lives of European settlers laid to rest in the burying ground.

Preservation Burlington will entertain you with stories about the prominent men and women who established our city, state, and nation. Learn about the people behind the familiar names etched into the fabric of our community – Fletcher, Chase, Edgcumbe, Edmunds – just to name a few! Find the grave of Buffalo Soldier and Vermont's very first senator with presidential aspirations.

Jason Stuffle, Old East End resident and Greenmount Cemetery expert, will share his knowledge of the diverse cast of characters buried in these plots, explain the symbolism found on the grave stones, and share his dedication to cleaning these stones and bringing hidden stories to lights. Make sure to ask him about the lost grave of a Civil War soldier he rediscovered on an expedition through the Schmanska Park woods!

Refreshments will be available. There is limited parking in the cemetery located at 339 Colchester Avenue. However, there will be ample parking in the UVM parking lot next to Kampus Kitchen at 273 Colchester Avenue, which is about a block away. Rain or shine!
