The Far Traveler: Voyages of a Viking Woman

Past event
Oct 23, 2022, 2 PM

Join us at the Town Hall in Franklin on Sunday, October 23rd at 2:00 PM for a fascinating talk by Vermont author Nancy Marie Brown. According to the medieval Icelandic sagas, a Viking woman came to the New World 500 years before Columbus. Gudrid the Far-Traveler, sister-in-law of the explorer Leif Erikson, tried to set up a colony on the shores of the Gulf of St Lawrence around the year 1000. While this story was long thought to be a myth, Brown tells how more and more of Gudrid's story is being proved true by recent archaeological digs in Newfoundland, Greenland, and Iceland.

This talk is free, open to the public, and accessible to those with disabilities. Sponsored in part by Vermont Humanities, and presented by the Haston Library.
