Gather with the Community Asylum Seekers Project (CASP) for an evening of music, art, light refreshments, and to hear from Susan Mills, a local author and former asylum attorney.
Sunday, October 23 @ 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Centre Congregational Church
As a Spanish-speaking immigration attorney for twenty years, Susan Mills prepared asylum cases for thousands of immigrants from Central America, with a focus on unaccompanied minors. Her new novel, On the Wings of a Hummingbird, follows a 15-year-old Guatemalan girl who draws on Mayan mythology to help her carve a future out of a childhood scarred by gang violence. The story explores forgiveness, redemption and healing, how to find a future of integrity with friends and community who have participated in atrocities. In the words of Junot Diaz, "There is poetry and hardship to spare in Mills' mesmerizing novel... a profound meditation on the human capacity for repair, for regeneration."
Susan will give a talk about the novel and its connections to asylum support in Southern Vermont, and we will also hear from CASP staff about what the Community Asylum Seekers Project is doing to support our new neighbors - and why. The evening will also feature art for purchase from local artists and artisans, as well as music provided by local musicians. It's a great opportunity to gather with friends and neighbors to celebrate and support good work, and we hope to see you there!

The link for our auction will be out starting early next week. Pieces include the painting above along with more paintings, quilts, bags, pottery, and much more!
