As the temperatures begin to drop, black bears will be actively seeking food to put on weight before the winter sets in – a stage called 'hyperphagia', which means excessive eating. At this time of year, bears will be foraging non-stop to build up their fat reserves and will often consume an average of 15,000 calories a day.
What strategies can our MRV community consider to ensure a safe coexistence with our ursine neighbors? What is the Fish and Wildlife Department doing to manage the bear population in Vermont? Jaclyn will provide an update on the status of Vermont's black bear population, human-bear incidents, and data collected regarding bear incidents within the Mad River Valley. She'll discuss management strategies used to manage the state's bear population and to address increasing reports of human-bear conflicts.
The Mad River Valley Bear Initiative is a coalition working to educate and engage the public on black bear biology and bear management issues in our community.
