Chittenden Asylum Seekers Assistance Network (CASAN)
Good news: In the past months, the families we assist have experienced incredible progress and joys, as well as very disappointing legal and bureaucratic delays. And, it's been an even busier time, as we helped several unexpected households, temporarily, on their journeys to asylum.
Our grassroots non-profit group of volunteers in Chittenden County assists local families who are in the legal process of seeking asylum in our country. There are so many more people who need this kind of assistance that we hope to expand this circle of support. Asylum-seekers, unlike refugees, are not allowed to receive many kinds of government assistance, nor are they allowed to work until they reach a certain point in the asylum process. And so our group has fully supported several families with all living expenses, has assisted other households in significant ways and has impacted the lives of even more through our statewide network with similar groups. It is much-needed – and very rewarding – work.
You are invited to the quarterly update of the Chittenden Asylum Seekers Assistance Network (CASAN) to hear amazing stories of these resilient people as they build new lives in safety in our communities. Register below to receive the link.
Spoiler alert: you'll hear about the arrival of work permits; two new jobs; the growth of wonderful children; and Immigration Court hearings.
You'll also learn about obstacles that asylum-seekers face in Vermont. We'll talk about current needs—such as a low-cost or donated car so one family can get to their new jobs—and budgetary needs due to the ending of VERAP, the State's rental-assistance program. And you'll hear about the wide range of volunteer work being done and practical ways that you can join in welcoming our new neighbors.
