The Morristown Centennial Library invites you to participate in the Vermont Humanities Vermont Reads Program by picking up a copy of this year's book, "The Most Costly Journey".
"The Most Costly Journey" features the stories of 19 of the migrant farmworkers who keep our Vermont dairy farms running, told in their own words, and illustrated by cartoonists from around New England. Each short chapter describes aspects of life as an immigrant farm worker in Vermont: crossing the southern border, struggling with English, adapting to winter, growing gardens, raising children, dealing with health crises, and working long hours. It is a quick and engaging read, and will leave you with a greater understanding of the many people who work hard to keep our state's dairy industry alive.
We are excited to welcome one of the illustrators of the book, cartoonist and educator Marek Bennett, to the library on Friday. Oct 14 at 5:00pm. Marek will give us an inside glimpse into the making of The Most Costly Journey, present some of the many comics documenting human migrations & struggles throughout the ages, and lead a hands-on demo to show how YOU can cartoon the stories of your own family, neighborhood and wider world. (No prior art experience needed — Everybody can create comics!) This program will be appropriate for adults, teens, and kids 8(ish) and up, so bring the family!
If you would like a copy of the book, please email us at info@centenniallibrary.org, call us at 888-3853, or just stop by the library and grab one off the display table by the front desk.
