Growing Pollinator Gardens and Restoring Habitats
The Putney Library on October 1st at 1 pm
Join us for a presentation by Susan Still and Peg Solon, UVM Master Gardeners, to learn from their extensive knowledge about pollinators and the native plants that sustain them and how you can create a habitat in your own backyard.
Jane Collister, the founder the Wildflower Pollinator Project, will also give a talk on her organization's work in the area and its goal to expand.
The Wildflower Pollinator Project is dedicated to turning the tide in the alarming decline in pollinator populations. It offers resources and an education on simple gardening methods developed specifically to protect native wildflower seeds when sown in the fall; from being eaten and the effects of global warming. These methods will also produce an abundance of seedlings in the spring.
Wildflower Nursery Kits utilize these methods, using a mesh covered frame and includes everything needed to grow 16 densely sown pots to cultivate a variety of wildflower seedlings. Local volunteers who become members of the project receive free kits in exchange for using their kits seedlings for use at community sites to repopulate urgently needed habitats.
An important goal for the project at this time is to expand its membership and create a board of directors to enable it to become a non-profit organization, making it eligible for significant funding to help it grow.
