The Saxtons River Valley Trails Initiative, the Rockingham Conservation Commission, and other local trail groups have been controlling knotweed next to a section of the planned Saxtons River Valley Trail in Bellows Falls since 2019, and we need help from community members to finish the work this year. Native plants are already starting to replace the knotweed where we have removed it! We'll dig up the plants by the roots and dispose of them nearby, to avoid spreading it.
1. When and where: two sessions, 2-4 PM this Sat. 10/1, AND/OR 10 AM-12 PM this Sun. 10/2. Come to one or both! We'll meet at the gravel parking lot at the end of Mill St. in Bellows Falls, just outside the gate of the BF Wastewater Plant.
2. Tools to bring: We will be digging/pulling knotweed in both sessions to get the roots. If you have any, please bring "round point shovels" like these, with long or short handles, https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/6113eu6HbNL._AC_SX466_.jpg? because they can get under the root ball, cut some roots, and pry it out. I will bring 2 extras of these. "Square point shovels" (which have no point) do not work very well on knotweed, so please don't bring any of those.
3. What to wear: sturdy shoes, long pants, gloves. There is a slight chance of poison ivy, and a higher chance of nettles. Bring water bottles.
Please call Peter at 802-289-3271 (cell) if you have questions.
