September 18-24, 2022 is Banned Books Week, with the theme "Books Unite Us, Censorship Divides Us".

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

The Lanpher Library has displays set up inside and outside of the Library. Please stop by and learn more about the most frequently banned and challenged books of 2021. Check one out and read it if you like!

We are giving away FREE books all week long and encourage you to bring a bag to fill up as you celebrate your freedom to read what you choose.

On Saturday, Sept. 24th from 10:00-1:00 the Library will have a Banned Books Day celebration, with a StoryWalk® set up, we'll give little prizes out to everyone who tries the "match the book to the reason it's banned" game, we'll give out free copies of one of the top most frequently challenged books of 2021 (while supplies last), and the local chapter of Amnesty International will be here with information on how you can take action.
