North Street - Saturday, Sept. 17

Past event
Sep 17, 2022, 9 AM

Hi Neighbors,
Following up on a FPF post a few days ago, some ONE neighbors will be out showing North Street some love this Saturday morning 9/17 from 9 am to 11 am – and it would be great if any of you are free to join the effort! The thinking is to tidy up a block or two by clearing off and sweeping the pavers and sidewalks, paint some tree guards, and reveal just how beautiful North Street can be.

In truth, North Street has 'great bones' due to the major upgrade done in 2006/2007 which buried all the overhead wires, installed ornamental street lighting, added granite curbing and new pavers, planted new trees protected by decorative iron guards, and widened the north-side sidewalk.

Just as true, time and lack of maintenance have taken a toll on the streetscape. For the sake of the diversity of small businesses scattered along the street, the families headed to work and school, and the broader Old North End Community, North Street needs some help.

Don't tell the City this, but the hope is that if the community shows it cares about our Main Street, the City will pick up on the effort and take on maintenance items we can't. A glimmer of that potential is there already: Public Works is loaning us safety vests and tools for Saturday and will pick up all the piles we make. Nice.

There are some longer-term ideas floating out there like Adopt-a-Block where groups would take on a small section of the street - making it more attractive for businesses and customers, and have North Street be a source of community pride. For discussion over the winter..

For now, a test block might raise some awareness and get the ball rolling … we'll meet at Nunyuns for coffee 8:30 -9:00 and hit the pavement at 9. If you can pitch in, and if you let me know, we'll make sure you have a vest and tools 😊 – or just come on by!
