The proposal for a merger has gone through many stages, and has been put forward by the committee as the best option compared to going forward without merging, in terms of keeping small elementary schools open and viable, keeping the widest possibilities for programming in the Middle and High Schools, and providing the most equitable education for the students of the nine or ten towns that would be included in the new district: The Addison North School District!
Now, we need everyone to learn as much as they can in order to be prepared to vote yes or no in November to the merger. In addition, if the merger is approved by voters in both districts, the newly merged district will need a school board, made up of 15 residents from the 9 or 10 towns (Lincoln may or may not participate in the vote/district) to start right away getting prepared for the transition in July 2023. So, if you have a strong commitment to our local schools, please consider running for the new school board. If the merger doesn't pass, the new board will never be formed, but in case it does, we (speaking as a resident and a parent) need passionate, caring people who want the best for all the children and communities in the county to be on the board.
The study committee will be holding a special working meeting to plan how to proceed to get the word out to the most possible voters before November and offer opportunities to learn about: the process, what we can and can't do with the merger, and why we (the study committee) voted to continue the process and take it to a vote of the people. The public is welcome to observe this planning session and offer comment in person at Vergennes Union High School library or via Zoom:
